FEDERER WINS BATTLE FOR THE AGES
July 8th 2007 17:46
Roger Federer has equalled Bjorn Borg’s record of five consecutive Wimbledon titles. The world No.1 was taken to the brink by Raphael Nadal in a battle for the ages. John Newcombe described it as “one of the best Wimbledon finals we have seen in a long time!”
It was billed as the ‘dream final’, the world’s best two players competing on tennis’ grandest day. It did not disappoint, the momentum swayed and twisted throughout. Federer withstanding the Spaniards onslaught to win in five gruelling sets.
As the last point was smashed away, a visibly emotional Federer fell to the ground arms outstretched, his eyes became watery and his lips trembling. The moment made all that more special because he was forced to fight all the way. Nadal was valiant in defeat and the only man that could have beat him in world tennis today was the Fed express.
No man has pushed Federer to five sets in the last 5 years, but Nadal almost caused a massive boil over. The clay court king proved he is a force on any surface controlling large portions of the match. He had more break points than Federer but could not convert when it mattered most. Roger forced to dig deep, twice down 15-40 in the 5th set. But the champion rose to the occasion and cemented his spot in the history books.
The final seemed to be leaning towards Nadal, with numerous hawk-eye challenges going against the defending champion. The challenges came on huge points and the Swiss Maestro was growing increasingly angry. “The system is killing me today, I mean look at the score now” Federer was heard complaining to the chair umpire. “You’ve got to be kidding me if that ball was in!” The challenges were disrupting the usually calm and calculating game of the world No.1 and he conceded the 4th set 6-2.
It was a captivating final and produced exhilarating tennis at times. Nadal threw everything at Federer and it appeared he was gaining the advantage. However the king of grass would not be denied and with Bjorn Borg watching from the stands Roger showed his fighting prowess. He did not outplay Raffa, not this time, the Fed express simply managed to win the big points when it was most critical.
The win leaving only one question; can he possibly make it 6 in a row? We will have to wait until next year to find out…

It seems like Nadal's closing the gap on Federer on grass whereas Federer hasn't been able to make the same level of progress against Nadal on clay.
Next year's Wimbledon should be very interesting!
