Shane, Shane, Shane - What's wrong with Watson?
Shane Watson is something of a paradox. An unanswerable riddle. A myth. He spends more time on the sidelines than Alex Ferguson. When will cricket Australia decide that his body is not up for the rigors of International cricket? How can an ‘elite athlete’, with the best coaches, physiotherapists and doctors keep breaking down? IS he cursed? Is he the unluckiest man on earth? Or is he simply not strong enough?
Physiotherapist Lindsay Trigar treated Watson when he was younger and bemoaned to the Herald Sun
"You can't put all his injuries down to bad luck," Trigar said.
"Why should a young, fit and healthy bloke be having these recurring hamstring problems?
This comes after Watson failed to travel to South Africa with the rest of the Australian’s. The reason; in the last training session before the Aussie's flew out, he 'tweaked' his hamstring. The same hamstring that kept him out of the entire Ashes series, the same hamstring that seems to flare every time a position opens in the all conquering Baggy-greens.
The Twenty20 World Cup would be a perfect stage to push a claim for a test berth. But Watson’s body has other ideas, every time a meaningful tournament or series comes around, the budding all-rounder gets injured. There is no doubting his potential, a 1st class average of 49 is very respectable. The Queenslander needs to prove his body can withstand the harshness of back to back test series.
Australia are about to embark on the most grueling schedule ever seen by a cricket team; players will contest more tests in 18 months than cricketer’s considered Australian royalty played in their entire careers. It is a very daunting and arduous task, one that will test even the most seasoned campaigners. What chance does Watson have of coming out on the other side?
We have tried nursing him, we have tried resting him, we have tried everything… It is hard when you know what he could become. Hopefully, this is only a minor scare and Watson can get himself right for the inaugural World Cup. Time is running out, another injury could spell the end of his troubled and injury plagued career. With so many talented youngsters coming through the ranks is Watson to much of an unknown quantity?
How many chances left does Watson have?
