What is happening... When and Where in the World

What is the most heart-breaking defeat?

October 7th 2007 10:53
In light of the Wallabies being knocked out of the World Cup I want to know the most heart-breaking losses in sport. The ones that make you angry, the ones you dare not even mention. One teams joy is another’s hell and we have some results that have been locked away.

The obvious contenders – for me.

Socceroos World Cup atrocity – the dive that rocked a nation

Followed up very quickly by the Iran game!

Rugby World Cup – Wilkinson drop goal breaks Aussie hearts

State of Origin – hmm, for Blues fans there have been a few – no more so than Mark Coyne’s miracle try. But the Hodgson pass from hell and the Bowen intercept are up there as well!

The Ashes! The Kasper dismissal and the cocky Poms – I still can’t watch that footage, even though it was one of the best series ever.

For Manly fans - the unmentionable final seconds of the 97 Grand Final - We have hated Darren Albert ever since.

Oh, and the penalty shoot-out between Tilligerry and Medowie where we were unbeaten all year in the U13’s only to lose in a penalty shoot-out in the Grand Final!

What other events have broken your heart. Sport can be cruel, let it out, let every body know, let it off your chest.

Perth Glory losing the big one twice.

Italy losing to south korea because of stupid mistakes, instead of scoring three points they end up losing in penalty overtime (that was a crazily retarded game).

Oooh, the biggest one, AC Milan losing the big one, from 3 points ahead to a loss

Ah- the Infamous liverpool game.
That is a big one! Not only being 3-0 up at half time and losing. But the fact it was in the biggest European competition - the most prestigous soccer tournament outside the World Cup... Devestating...
Worthy contender for most heart-breaking event

Jane Saville!!! Absolutely devestating!!

Sydney Olympics - home crowd going ballistic, she is walking into the stadium- a gold medal beconing- clearing in 1st place.

To get disqualified there must have been the most gut-wrenching experience, I was in the crowd and it was one of the most hollow feelings. I mean - walking is walking and for 80,000 sport fans to be feeling hallow about a walking evemt speaks volumes to how bad it was.

Robbed of certain victory in the world's biggest sporting stage. Who wouldn't cry?

Poor old Aussies! You didn't think you would have got further than the semis did you?

We Kiwis thought we were going to win the bloody thing!

Cheers cuzzies!

There's always next time - four more years!!!

If we had met you in the Semi's and lost, it would not have been sad. Well, nobody likes losing a semi and us trans-tasman rivals hate losing to each other. but make no mistake... nothing is worse than losing to England. Nothing!!

The Aussie's played ordinary and we were exposed. simple. You Kiwi's though. What is it with you guys and the World Cup? It seems you guys forget how to play for a month period, once every 4 years...

You are the opposite to Brazil in soccer. They are all talk and no action for 3 years. come the world cup they are near unstoppable... I know which boat I'd rather be in.

cheers

Yes....there is something worse than losing to England.

Losing to France yet again. Especially when you're tipped to win the World Cup. Yet again.

...and then you choke. Yet again.

At least Richie's haircut looked good.

lol, ouch!

but if you were an All Black fan - right on the money, as usual Dusk.

Like India and cricket - rugby is a religion over there so to keep choking must be agony.

They are the Bart Simpson of rugby - continually being choked by a less skilled, less co-odinated oaf.

lol.

Oh, I forgot to add a very special person to this list.. .How I could forget I don't know!!

The MacDaddy of choking and heart-braking losses.

The one, the only.....

Mr Greg Norman

If you want somebody to lose the un-loseable... Greg is your man!

Australia's loss to England - Kasper getting caught behind needing only one run to tie!!

ANother

The Border - Thompson partnership, that was devo!! to come so close only for a juggling catch at slip to rip the hearts out of millions... and millions of australian sport fans...

travesty.

Three spring to mind - losing to Germany 5-4 on penalties in Euro 96 on home turf at Wembley, losing to Argentina on penalties at the 1998 world cup and Liverpool losing the champions league final last May to AC Milan.

criminal results!!
