Game 1: Bulldogs vs Broncos
With a litter of injuries early in the game, it was always going to be tough for the Bulldogs. Key forwards Asotasi and Willie Tonga suffered possible season ending knee injuries painting a sorrow picture for the Bulldogs' reserves bench. The Broncos took advantage of a tiring Canterbury outfit to run absolute holes through their defence.
Snapping a 5 game losing streak, any suggestions of a slump will disappear from the media this week. As good as the Broncs were, the Dogs were just plain terrible. Compounding the result and the injury crisis, big Willie Mason's late shot on Shane Perry could see him miss a game or two.
BRISBANE 30 (S Berrigan 2 T Carroll D Lockyer B Tate tries C Parker 3 D Lockyer 2 goals) bt BULLDOGS 0 at Telstra Stadium. Referee: S Clark. Crowd: 26,111.
Game 2: Sharks vs Panthers
In what could be described as a strange match, the Panthers somehow managed to overcome a 20 point deficit to defeat Cronulla by an unconverted try. It was the Panthers second biggest comeback in history and the Sharks learnt the real meaning of the term 'it's a game of two halves'. Darren Albert's double and his absolutely awesome try saving tackle weren't enough for the team from the Shire who can no longer make the finals.
The game seemed all but over when the Sharks scored five unanswered tries, but the Panthers scored 24 unanswered points to keep their slim finals hopes alive. Rhys Wesser was instrumental with 2 four-pointers and when Lee Hookey grounded an intelligent Campbell kick in the red zone, it was game over. The Sharks' fans booed them from the field.
PENRITH 32 (R Wesser 2 M Gordon L Hookey L Rooney C Stapleton tries P Campbell 4 goals) bt CRONULLA 28 (D Albert 2 P Gallen 2 R Williams tries L Covell 4 goals) at Toyota Park. Referee: J Robinson. Crowd: 7,827.
Game 3: Cowboys vs Knights
The Knights have proven they can hold their own without Andrew Johns - against pretty weak competition. Teenage sensation Jarred Mullen was unreal in the Johns' jersey, scoring the match winning try, setting up another and nailing the final field goal. Even more amazing considering it was later revealed he had 12 painkilling injections! POH!
Buderus was charged for a high shot, the only black mark on the win. The credibility of the win has to be questioned though, the Cowboys have been in absolute disarray, for a top-4 hopeful to win by just 7 leads me to question the win. The win keeps the Knights hopes of a top-four finish alive and ensures North Queensland, grand finalists last season, will miss the finals for the first time since 2003.
NEWCASTLE 19 (A Quinn 2 J Mullen tries D Abraham 3 goals J Mullen field goal) bt NORTH QUEENSLAND 12 (J Smith N Sweeney tries B McConnell N Sweeney goals) at Dairy Farmers Stdm. Referee: P Simpkins. Crowd: 17,898.
Game 4: Storm vs Warriors
Despite this tipster backing the Storm by "1000", they've managed to shock every NRL fan by losing to the Warriors at Olympic Park. The Kiwis brought the Storm's 11 match winning streak and minor premiership celebrations to a screaming halt. In a scrappy match which saw the lead change several times, the Warriors managed a great win. Winger Manu Vatuvei was targetted successfully from the kickoff twice but proved to be influential in the win with a charging run down the sideline offloading to Brent Webb for the match winner.
The season would have been much more interesting had the Warriors had the extra 4 points that had been deducted from them at the beginning of the season. Having beaten the Storm at home, who knows what they could have done come semi finals time...
NZ WARRIORS 24 (B Webb 2 S Mannering M Vatuvei tries L Hohaia 4 goals) bt MELBOURNE 20 (M Geyer G Inglis M King S Turner tries C Smith 2 goals) at Olympic Park. Referee: T Archer. Crowd: 13,477.
Game 5: Dragons vs Tigers
Barrett andwered the critics who questioned his committment and passion with an absolute stellar performnce. The Dragons were just too good for the defending premiers today which showed on the scoreboard. Gasnier crossed for a hat trick in a match which saw 12 tries scored.
The Dragons finally brought an end to a disastrous five-match losing streak with the nine-tries-to-three pasting of the premiers. The Tigers are now out of contention and looking towards 2007 and the return of their stars. I'm certain the 'we was robbed' attitude will be undertaken after the decisions going against them in the golden point loss to the Raiders last week.
ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA 46 (M Gasnier 3 B Morris 2 M Bickerstaff A Gorrell C Greenshields W Naiqama tries A Gorrell 3 W Naiqama 2 goals) bt WESTS TIGERS 16 (R Farah C Heighington C Lawrence tries S Prince 2 goals) at Oki Jubilee Stadium. Referee: S Hayne. Crowd: 14,211.
Game 6: Roosters vs Eels
One league fan had more riding on this game than anyone else. Reports of a punter relying on this game for a $623 050 payout from the TAB! Massive congratulations to that punter, congrats on a very smart bet!
The Eels continued their impressive winning streak today with a remarkable offensive performance. Forwards and backs combined well but the major concern heading in to the finals is the Dragons' defence. Letting in 26 points against a pretty feeble opposition is a deplorable effort this time of year. Their great attacking play will keep them in contention. Top 4 for my liking.
PARRAMATTA 40 (L O'Dwyer 2 E Grothe J Hayne P Marsh B Smith D Widders tries L Burt 6 goals) bt SYDNEY ROOSTERS 26 (R Cross 2 C Fitzgibbon C Flannery A Roberts tries C Fitzgibbon 3 goals) at Aussie Stadium. Referee: P Simpkins. Crowd: 15,142
Game 7: Manly vs Souths
Manly maintained its grip on outright third position on the NRL ladder today with a 38-16 win over South Sydney at Brookvale Oval. Led by stand in captain MATT ORFORD, the Sea Eagles overcame a 12-10 halftime deficit to run out seven tries to three winners.
Fullback Brett Stewart extended his try scoring feast at home, bagging a hat trick to take his record to 30 four-pointers from his last 28 games at Brookvale.
MANLY 38 (B Stewart 3 S Matai 2 S Dunley S Menzies tries M Orford 5 goals) bt SOUTH SYDNEY 16 (J Galuvao P Mellor N Merritt tries B Champion 2 goals) at Brookvale Oval. Referee: R Smith. Crowd: 19,253.
