Rick Kelly Keeps His Crown
December 12th 2006 08:20
The Age reports that Holden driver Rick Kelly will keep the 2006 V8 Supercar Championship after stewards dismissed a protest by Ford's Craig Lowndes.
Lowndes and Kelly went into the last race of the season equal on points. Kelly bumped Lowndes early in the race sending him spinning off the track. The resultant damage to Lowndes' car practically put him out of the race, handing Kelly the title.
Lowndes has decided not to appeal the stewards decision, but did say "A champion is a champion that wins on their own merits. Whether he did or didn't intentionally hit me, the only way they were going to beat us is if we had an incident or an accident, and we had both of them." Lowndes also said that his Bathurst triumph and three other round wins made him and his team the moral champions for the year and that it was a hollow victory for the Holden driver.
Do you agree with Lowndes assessment, or is Rick Kelly a deserving champion?
