Crouching Tiger hidden Panther
July 7th 2007 02:43
Leading 20-4 in last night’s clash against the Tigers, it looked like Penrith were putting together a strong performance, one to give their fans hope. However, as is the story of their season, the Panthers went mysteriously missing for over half an hour and the Tigers ran riot, scoring 8 tries to 4 to win 43-26.
The first 20 minutes promised so much for the 2003 Premiers, racing out to an early 14-point lead. They then scored before half-time to lead by 20 and it appeared they would run away with the game. The Tigers then proved that they are a genuine force in the 2007 competition with a captivating display of speed and precision. The Panthers have now lost 11 of their past 13 games.
After 16 games of the 2007 NRL Premiership Penrith are languishing on the bottom of the table with only 4 wins to their name. They have a relatively strong and exciting squad but appear to be merely shadows of their former selves.
Panther’s fans were rejoicing only two weeks ago when they upset 2nd placed Manly. This was meant to be the catalyst for a Black cat revival and a subsequent storm towards the top 8. In reality, it was a flash in the pan, a reminder that if they play the full 80 minutes they can challenge most sides in the competition.
It seems you would have more chace finding the mysterious black cat that stalks the Blue Mountains than a consistent Panther’s outfit. Perhaps that is where they endlessly disappear too! Whilst the Tigers were undeniably brilliant last night, Penrith capitulated and showed little resistance.
Penrith in 2007 are a team that disappears to the dismay of their fans and punters alike. Maybe we should just start looking for Wally instead…
