It takes the best part of three hours to travel from Bathurst to ANZ Stadium, but that hasn’t stopped a group of CSU students making an annual pilgrimage to support the Wizard Blues.
The 362km (Round) roadtrip to State of Origin started in 2004 and coincided with the introduction of golden point, Shaun Timmins wrote himself into Origin folklore that night with a famous field goal and another great Origin tradition was born.
Kurt McPherson who represented NSW and Australian University sides in 2006 was the brains behind the annual ‘DK Pool Club’ trip and he has been hooked ever since that historic night.
“We started in 2004, there were over 40 off us and it took two mini buses to get us all there,” McPherson said.
“It is something you just have to do every year, there is nothing like Origin, the atmosphere is unreal and the footy is so good.
“I’ll never forget that first trip, to be all locked up and then to win the game with Timmins field goal, it doesn’t get any better than that.”
McPherson who is currently playing for Wagga brothers in the Group 9 Rugby League competition looks forward to the series every year.
“It was the Andrew Johns show in 2005,” he said.
“Then the next year it was Brett Finch kicking that field goal to win the game, so we have had so many great memories from our trips.”
This year the group will all be wearing white jumpsuits to standout in the crowd, but don’t let the colour fool you, they are Blues to the bone.
“We always do something a little different to stand out, just to show everyone back in Bathurst that we are there,” he said.
“In 2006 we all wore green shirts and last year we all wore our favourite retro jerseys.
“It is all just a bit of fun and I know the boys are all geed-up and ready to go this year.”
