NRL FINALS - the Captain's Call
September 8th 2008 07:00
The 8 captains gathered at the Sydney Football Stadium for the traditional Captain's Call.
But who will be the last man standing in four weeks time?
Can the Warriors become the first team to win from 8th spot or will the Storm have all the answers?
Can the Dragons continue their hoodoo over the Sea Eagles, or will Beaver Menzies inspire the Sea Eagles in his last ever game at his beloved Brookvale Oval?
The Raiders are a free-flowing, try scoring machine, the Sharks are the most miserly defenders in the competition - something has got to give! Will the Sharks strangle the Raiders, or will the Raiders expose the Sharks lack of attacking potential?
Darren Lockyer has played triple the amount of finals games than 13 of the Roosters side combined, will experience win out, or will the Roosters reverse their defeat from earlier in the year.
Eight of the Roosters side that took the field against the Dragons last week have never played finals football, while Brent Grose, Riley Brown, Anthony Tupou, Nate Myles and James Aubusson combine for just eight finals appearances between them.
“We were actually fairly surprised when we sat down the other day and tried to work out who had played semi-final football and there were only a handful of us,” he said.
“Most of the backline haven’t played in it before so we got the guys who have played together and had a good talk about the need to fire the young blokes up.
“It is a different level and the intensity needs to lift, you can’t go out just thinking it is the average game, you really have to step it up and be ready for it.”
In contrast, the Broncos have had plenty of experience at the business end of the year.
Darren Lockyer and Tonie Carroll combine for a staggering 49 finals appearances between them.
What a great time to be a league fan, it is so close to call... Storm are the obvious favourites, but as we have seen so many times, finals are not won on reputation, they are won on blood, sweat, tears and most importantly luck!
