Manly hooker Matt Ballin believes stepping out of Michael Monaghan’s imposing shadow almost drove him to distraction.
Monaghan was a cornerstone of the Sea Eagles’ surge into the NRL Telstra Premiership Grand Final last year, their first in a decade, and many wondered how Manly would cope with the loss of their former captain.
Ballin himself struggled with the role but soon found his footing, helping the Sea Eagles to finish equal first, and is now a key figure in their clash with the Warriors at the Sydney Football Stadium on Saturday night.
