Can Hackett Breaks Thorpe's 400m Record?
December 4th 2006 04:34
The Age reports that Grant Hackett won his fourth Australian 400 metres freestyle title last night, most likely he will go on to win his second world title next March, and the possibly the Olympic title in 2008.
However if Hackett accomplishes all those things his achivements will be dampened by the "what if Thorpe were here" questions.
So is the only way for Hackett to receive the respect he deserves in the 400m to beat Thorpe's world record? Thorpe's mark is 3:40.08 set in 2002, Hackett's PB is 3:42.51 set in 2001. Last night he did it in 3:46.00. Hackett has stated he would love to beat Thorpe's mark, but is it beyond him?
