Wallabies 25, Second Stringbox 17
July 7th 2007 12:20
The Wallabies have sent George Gregan and Stephen Larkham out on a winning note by beating the Springbox at Telstra Stadium.
The so-called second string South Africa bolted to a shock 17 point lead before most of the crowd had found their seats. It was a rude-awakening for the Aussies, who were expected to trample the youngsters from the Box.
With only months to go before the World Cup starts, the Wallabies will need to vastly improve on this rusty performance. It took over 20 minutes for the green and gold to find their feet and start mounting any sort of pressure. Eventually, experience won the day, the Wallabies were able to capitalise on good possession and set plays; scoring 25 unanswered points.
It was far from an impressive performance and the Aussie’s will have their work cut-out to beat the All-Blacks in New Zealand in a fortnight’s time.
Still, the night belonged to the two stalwarts of the Australian side who played their last test on home soil. Larkham and Greegan have achieved everything the game has to offer and will sing their swan song at the World Cup later this year. They have both represented the green and gold in over 100 test matches and served the game of rugby with distinction.
To both great players, its good-luck and goodbye.
