A place to debate all things sport

What is Australian’s greatest sporting moment and why?

October 5th 2007 05:29
What is Australian’s greatest sporting moment and why?

Is it Cathy Freeman’s 400m gold medal at the Sydney Olympics?
America’s Cup Glory
Pharlap
Bradman strolling to the middle
Makybe Diva
Steve Waugh’s heroics (any one of them)
World Cup endeavors (any sport)

Or maybe it is something a little left field?

Is it Kostya Tzu winning the world title?

Darren Albert’s ‘try that saved league’

The mens 4x100 metres swimming against the Americans

Mick Doohan’s titles,

Layne Beachleys world crowns

What moment is your favourite? It could be one of these or it might be something totally different. This is the place to discuss, debate and flat out argue your case. Remember, this is a sports bar, what better place to be controversial.

We have so many of them it's hard to choose. I think the America's Cup was one of the bigger events.

Hiya buddy...

Far too many to name but naturally for me...they usually exist in Rugby...but will agree with Harry re America's Cup. When we won it...it was truly a David v Goliath moment. To read what it took to get there...oh man...

Am also a big fan of 500cc now Moto GP so all of Doohan's triumphs were great...and just recently, Casey Stoner doing us proud.

Toutai's try. Eales's last match '01.

The '99 RWC...and of course Larkham's semi drop goal.

Joe Roff's last Super 12...Brumbies kicked Crusaders butt.

'03 RWC...Wallabies v All Blacks... hahahahahhahahaha!!

Lauren Burns Olympic win.

Always proud of Layne's achievements.

I follow The Wallaroos and am most proud of the fact that without the pomp and glory that The Wallabies are privy to, not to mention the money, they still push themselves

Freeman's win...well, she did it and I cried along with the rest of Australia but would have liked to see an even match-up. Marie Jose Perec obviously knew she couldn't win.

Steven Bradbury's gold medal! Last man skating!

...BUT...my most favourite would have to be John Eales' kick to win Bledisloe 2000...the greatest Captain ever...Nobody (because Nobody's perfect) stepped up to the plate when Mortlock got injured and then... over and...ABs' out.

Sweet bliss.

Hope you're well buddy...how's the job?

And this....Debbie Flintoff-King's lunge for a gold medal at the '88 Olympic 400m hurdles final in Seoul.

the socceroos exploits in germany. even though it wasn't a win, the manner in which all australians got behind them was awesome. i often argue with people that the socceroos are the only truly 'australian' team because if you see the faces in the crowd in their games, it is a multicultural mix that reflects the nation.

no other team or sport has such a truly australian following.

Quite possible the one question that will get the entire pub talking.

Doyen of Rugby and all things sport - the encyclopaedic Dusk - has a pretty reasonable mortgage on several of my choices too.

The America's Cup is something that lives in the hearts of all Australian's who were glued to the box that fateful day, while the eurphoria of our Socceroos making the World Cup for the second time was something I'll never forget.

Remember as a kid reliving every punch in Lionel Rose's World Boxing Championship win.

I guess the advent of televsion has had a large part to play in forming our views - evidenced by the poll done by ABC Grandstand - where listeners were asked to list similar.

Of the 25 most popular responses - none were pre-television Australia and only 2 - Herb Elliott's Olympic 1,500m win at the Rome Olympics, 1960 and the Tied Test between Aust and the West Indies in Brisbane the same year - were pre-1974 - and co-incidentally - the arrival of colour TV in Oz.

See you at the bar - my shout.

Oh Dusk, John Eales - that takes me back. That was absolutely sensational! I Remember it like it was yesterday.

I agree that the Socceroos just by the mere fact that they captured Australia's imagination deserve to be in the conversation. Soccer or football has always been a touchy subject here- a 'soft' game, 'their' game. But the Socceroos seemed to transcend that boundary, even for just a fleeting second and it was a glorious bandwagoning ride!

to add to the debate, Queenslander's would put forward Mark Coyne's famous last gasp miracle try as a sporting moment.

Sydney sider's would throw Leo Barry's mark into immortality as a contender.

I'll throw in one Michael Bevan into the debate. "It's out its four, its victory to Australia, what an effort, what a stroke! IT's Michael Bevan's ending at the Sydney Cricket Ground, the Crowd is going wild!" - The ever excited Bill Lawry screaming over the top of 30,000 fans going ballistic. As Bevan hits a 4 off the last ball to beat a resurgent West Indies outfit

My shout - let the debate continue

Sportbar,

I'm not a big sports fan, but for me the greatest moments were when Australia took the America's Cup from America (before they changed the rules so that we couldn't do it again) ... and when we took the Ashes from England (before they changed the rules so that we couldn't do it again)...

Great victories that proved we had come of age.

Lilla ...

1882/83 when Australia beat England and the Ashes was started.
For a bunch of colonies to beat the anguish: great.
For the Ashes to start: great.
For me to have serial for brekky: great.

Traditionalist - good answer. It takes us back to the start of it all - an event which sparked our love affair with sport and our love affair with beating England. A great sporting tradion had been unleashed! It is also the very early start of the winging Pom adogy. England still haven't forgiven us for that one and a legend was born!

There is something very special about and Aus v Eng match - in any sport. IT is one of the greatest rivalries and was started by one simple cricket match. Is there anything better than beating the Poms? hard to say - but we should enjoy the feeling tonight! Go you good thing - Go you Wallabies!

A beer to Norm - Great Answer

Like Dusk, Toutai Kefu's try was awesome. I have a picture of that, which was once in my classroom, and now resides on the back of my dunny door.
For the rest of us, the tears came later, and I hope there will be no tears tonight, but seeing Justin Harrison and Nathan Sharpe bawling their eyes out during the singing of the national anthem in the last RWC Final was a very memorable sports related moment for me. It epitomised what it meant to play for your country. I'm not very nationalistic, and think it's character-building for Aussie sportspeople to lose occasionally (unless you're a swimmer. They sulk a bit more than others when it happens to them. Maybe it's all that lactic acid?), but I felt proud of the Wallabies and all they represented in that moment. Even Harrison, whom I used to bet how many seconds into the game it would take for him to start a brawl! (Another classic JH moment was during a Haka (I think it was a Super 12 game when he played for the Tahs. Can't recall what team was the opposition) when he folded his arms and tapped his chin ponderously! I mostly thought he was a bit of a tool, but that moment made me laugh).
These moments are the sort I remember most. The moments where we see them as real people; celebrating or suffering, are what are imprinted in my mind. When the gods of sport become (sometimes torn) flesh and bone, exhibiting real emotions and experiences like the rest of us, they enter my memory, because at these moments they show they are human, too, not mere legends.

Oh, there will be tears, Jonny Wilkinson sitting near the 22, arms rested on his knees as the Wallabies celebrate in the background. Perhaps our greatest sporting moment may be tonight - that's the beauty of sport, you never know... s

Yeah... I've been hoping Matt Burke might get the call-up and play for England tonight, but alas, I don't think that dream will come true. That would be a great Australian sporting moment in my book! The equivalent of giving the ARU the bird!
His shoulder was another moment burned into my brain. Ouch! That moment when he was flipped over hurt all who saw it.
