Great night for Sports Fans
July 13th 2007 05:37
What a night of sport we have lined up tonight! The weekend is upon us and we have a lot to look forward to. The NRL has a massive double header which should produce some exhilarating football, it’s 2nd vs 5th and 3rd vs 6th! The first game at 7.30 (Channel Nine) should be an absolute blockbuster with both Sea Eagles and Tigers in scintillating form. The Eagles demolished the Roosters last week with an emphatic 56-0 victory, whilst the Tigers remarkably overcame an early deficit against the Panthers to run out 43-26 winners. The game should provide a good yardstick to compare how the two teams are travelling leading into September. Both teams have been predicted to make the preliminary finals and it should be a really interesting match. The boys from Brookvale playing at home should be buoyed by Steve Menzies who announced that he will play on next season. The Tigers on the other hand will be trying to prove their coach wrong; who strangely declared that his side could not beat the silvertails.
The Second clash is just as enticing, the hotly contested Queensland derby. The match is already a sell-out, with Wayne Bennett claiming that Queensland is now officially the heartland of rugby league. The three teams north of the border equate for over 25% of all spectators through the turnstile this year. Proof that rugby league is indeed flourishing in the Sunshine state. The most interesting aspect of this clash is the battle of the halves. Arguably the two best players in the world today, Thurston and Lockyer have dominated the NRL at club, state of origin and international level. The winner of this intriguing battle will probably decide the outcome of the match and it should provide some fireworks.
Also tonight, the Socceroos run out against Iraq, determined to put the demons to rest after a dismal 1-1 draw against Oman. The Aussies are short-priced favourites to win the Asian Cup but will have to overcome steamy conditions and a tricky opponent to ensure a passage into the 2nd round. The green and gold has come under heavy criticism with Russel Arnold’s position at the helm being questioned from all quarters. The Aussies have promised to put Iraq to the sword, but do not be mislead, this is by no means a walkover victory.
With these three sporting blockbusters all occurring tonight, there is plenty to keep the enthusiasts happy. This is without mentioning the AFL with St Kilda facing D-Day in a do or die match. Their finals hopes hang in the balance with nothing but a win good enough. We also have the Tour de France which after last nights dramatic events is starting to heat up. The man widely tipped to win the tour Vinokourov had an accident which forced him behind the peleton and he lost 1min15 by the time he reached the finish line. This means that the tour has been blown wide open and it gives the Australian contingent a real chance of causing a major upset and claiming the yellow jersey.
Whatever your sport, there is something to satisfy everyone! Enjoy the weekend…

Nozzin' Aroun'
I'll be giving the remote a workout tonight to catch up with everything - especially keeping my fingers crossed that the Socceroos can get up.

Socceroos should win, and the sport this weekend promises to be awesome!

You are so right...and that's so sad...
We should have faith regardless.
Who's your pick for this Saturday? The Boks or the Blacks?
The ABs are angry and humiliated (yeah!) and that's their incentive.
The Boks...and I don't want to call them a second tier team because that insults the depth of talent they have...might just have their 'it' night. When it just all gels for them...especially because the Blacks are disregarding them already.
Have a great sporting weekend Sports Bar!

With all respect to the Box, I expect the Kiwis to prove their favourite tag and run out fairly comfortable winners. But I would not bet the house on it....
