Cricket goes crazy on Auction block...
February 21st 2008 05:07
Well they went under the hammer – for insane amounts of money… It’s Cricket but you’ve never seen it like this…
Andrew Symonds is the 2nd highest paid only behind Indian One Day Captain MS Dhoni – both well over the $1 million mark… Not bad pay for a couple of weeks work… it is comparable to the rich European Soccer clubs and the NBA.. ridiculous contracts – ludicrous amounts of money for minimal effort…
At best Symonds can bat all 20 overs (That’s a long time) and bowl a maximum of 4 over’s per game… which is considerably less than what he does in an average 50 over game… the pay has gone up – the workload down… it’s a no-brainer…
Symonds is laughing all the way to the bank and it seems the controversy that surrounded him hasn’t effected his appeal in the Cricket mad country of India… in short – these players are gods… They are Midas – apparently… tell you what – the bidders presumably expect everything their players touch to turn to solid gold…
Symonds is getting paid 3 times more than one of the greatest batsmen the game has ever seen and his current captain Ricky Ponting, hard to fathom... Believe it!
Then again – grounds will be sold out – advertising rates in India will go through the roof and at least in the first season World Cricket will be captivated by it… but does it have long term appeal… we can only wait and see…
Will this spark cricket to other countries – who knows… but it could definitely change the face of the game as we know it… It has been coming for a long time – now we will see what it means to players, spectators and offials a like..
So which team has the best players?
Who spent their money the best?
The Daily Telegraph has the figures reported this way
