The Best Sport Movies of all time

Greatest Sport Movies of all time

"Rocky"

-No list would be complete without the Rocky series. And you have to agree life imitates art which imitates life.

Rocky was a true rags to riches story on the screen and off - before it hit the big screen - who was Sylvester Stallone? It was made on a shoe-string budget and in only 28 days. Sylvester Stallone, was an unbankable unknown at the time - an underdog actor/writer in the film industry (with 32 previously-rejected scripts) similar to the boxing 'bum' in the film. Stallone supposedly wrote the script for the sports comeback film over a three-day period.

The movie has become a timeless classic and is as popular today as it was when it was first screened.

Stallone is brilliant as Rocky"Just one more round"
Burgess Meridith steals the show as Micky - Rocky's trainer
Carl Weathers - is the larger than life Apollo Creed and a great foil to Stallone.

The video montages and music has been etched into our very existence. And just like the sport of boxing, where boxes don't know when to retire - fighting for glory long gone Rocky returned for Rocky V and Rocky Balboa - but we forgive our champions for their one last grab at glory - (See Mr Fenech) Even Muhammad Ali had two ill-advised comeback attempts that made people pity him...

Rocky received ten Academy Awards nominations in nine categories winning three... and what was it up against, only a small matter of Taxi Driver and All The Presidents Men:

* Best Picture (Robert Chartoff and Irwin Winkler) (won)
" * Best Director (John G. Avildsen) (won)
* Film Editing (Richard Halsey and Scott Conrad) (won)
* Best Original Screenplay (Sylvester Stallone)
* Best Actor (Sylvester Stallone)
* Best Actress (Talia Shire)
* Best Supporting Actor (Burt Young)
* Best Supporting Actor (Burgess Meredith)
* Best Music, Original Song (Bill Conti, Carol Connors and Ayn Robbins for "Gonna Fly Now")
* Best Sound (Harry W. Tetrick, William L. McCaughey, Lyle J. Burbridge and Bud Alper)

The famous scene of Rocky running up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art has become a cultural icon. In 1982 a statue of Rocky, commissioned by Stallone for Rocky III, was placed at the top of the Rocky Steps. City Commerce Director Dick Doran claimed that Stallone and Rocky had done more for the city's image than "anyone since Ben Franklin."

Differing opinions of the statue and its placement led to a relocation to the sidewalk outside the Philadelphia Spectrum Arena, although the statue was temporarily returned to the top of the steps in 1990 for Rocky V, and again in 2006 for the 30th anniversary of the original Rocky movie (although this time it was placed at the bottom of the steps). Later that year, it was permanently moved to a spot next to the steps.

The scene is frequently parodied in the media. In 2006 E! Entertainment Television named the "Rocky Steps" scene number 13 in its 101 Most Awesome Moments in Entertainment.

"YO ADRIAN... I DID IT!"

"Remember the Titans"

* Won- Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture- (Denzel Washington)
* Won- Outstanding Motion Picture
* Nominated- Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture- (Wood Harris)
* Nominated- Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture- (Nicole Ari Parker)

"League of their own"

When World War II threatens to shut down Major League Baseball, candy manufacturing magnate Walter Harvey (Garry Marshall) decides to create a women's league to make money. Ira Lowenstein (David Strathairn) is put in charge and scout Ernie Capadino (Jon Lovitz) is sent out to recruit players.

A movie about Women’s Sport? (See Women in Sport post!) This is a great flick, Tom Hanks is a genius and the story hits many key themes.

"Cool Runnings"

"A gold medal is a wonderful thing. But if you're not enough without it, you'll never be enough with it."

What a great, feel good, comedy filled, sport movie. Capturing the Olympic spirit – just to compete.

"Mighty Ducks"

Okay – I know all the reasons why this is a bad movie, but come on… it is the Mighty Ducks! Bad acting and a bad plot can’t stop this movie from being one of Sport’s best.

"Happy Gilmour"

Proof that comedy and sport can work together – I’m not the biggest Adam Sandler fan – but he reinvented a sporting genre before it was cool to do so (See any movie made by Will Farrell these days)… Great quoting material, mixed with ludicrous sporting antics – Great holiday fun, two enthusiastic thumbs up! - and the return of Carl Weathers (Apollo Creed) as the loveable, handless Chuck.

"Chariots of Fire"

"Raging Bull"

"Any Given Sunday"

"Jerry Maguire"

Before Tom Cruise jumped about on couches he actually made some significant movies… This definitely one of them. “SHOW ME THE MONEY” – and we certainly did.

"Days of Thunder"

He also managed to make this movie…

"Field of Dreams"

"Million Dollar Baby"

"The Hustler"

"Pool Hall Junkies"

-Okay the acting is terrible and the plot is... What plot? But still, this movie had to be added to the list. One of those really stupid movies that you watch as a kid and just love. Actually it makes the list solely because of Christopher Walken... Give this man a monologue - he is the king of the random speech - and he towers over the other 'actors' in this movie

"Oh did I stutter? About a minute a go it was like an evening at the Apollo in this Mother F*** and now all of a sudden its as quite as a church."

"Don't just beat him, Kick his arse..."
