A place to debate all things sport

What are the most inspirational sport moments of all time?

October 9th 2007 11:18
There are moments in sport that you will simply never forget. These are the stories you tell your kids, over and over again. The moments that give you goose bumps, they make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, the moments that remind you why you watch sport.

Things like Ali and Freeman lighting the Olympic cauldrons respectively – truly unforgettable.

Marathon runners mind over body – the image of athletes dragging their bodies over the line, “finish the race” – unbelievable feats of courage and determination.

Steve Waugh taking on Curtly Ambrose - not backing down for anybody

Norm Provan and Arthur Summons embracing after the Grand Final – that single image has been immortalized and was the inspiration of the NRL trophy. (see above)

There are so many more, what moments do you remember?

The ones that make you feel good like the movies – Cool Runnings & RockyI-IV!

The U.S beating Russia in hockey during the Olympics, Joe Namath triumphantly raising, "No. 1" after beating Baltimore in Superbowl lll, and MY Pop Werner team scoring three touchdowns in 2 min. 37 seconds to beat the previous year's champs 24-20.

DuskDevi, Your comment cracked me up!

South Korea beating Italy to reach '02 World Cup semi-final was special. Roy Keane's dragging ManU to a 3-2 win at Delle Alpi vs Juventus in '98. Liverpool coming back from 3-0 down at half-time vs. Milan to win. Wilkinson's drop-goal to win WC (sorry for bringing up bad memories).
Michael Johnson running 19.32 easing up in Olympic Final 200.... incredible. BobbyJo winning the Grand National (he's from near me, and I won a few quid on him!) DEsert Orchid's fourth King George. I could go on...

But my fave of all time has got to be... Rocky running up the steps!!

No doubt was Roy Keane pulling Manchester United back from 20 down in the98 European semi-final against Juventus to a 3-2 win in which Zinedine Zidane looked like he wasn't even on the field. During that game, Roy Keane became ineligable for the final with a yellow card, he just played twice as hard and eventually awarded with English player and players player of the year.
