SRI Lanka Commit suicide - WHY WHY WHY?

Why Sri Lanka Why?
Well… well… well…
What can you possibly say? They were warned not to do it… They were pleaded not to do it,,,, They were begged not to do it.
Why then did Sri Lanka win the toss at the Gabba and choose to have a bowl?
Absolute Suicide!! Any chance they had of winning the game was ruined with one poor decision. Actually, make that two bad decisions… You chose to bowl fist at the Gabba which history shows is like jumping out of a plane without a parachute…. Mistake 1…. But then you pick a side without your strike fast bowler. The one guy who could use the conditions to his advantage and rattle the Aussie order… Why isn’t Malinga playing?
Touring sides think that bowling 1st is the ‘safe’ option… Protecting their batting orders from the new ball and a fresh pitch… In fact, you are signing your death warrant.
When asked about the toss the same stock standard reply comes…. “So you’ve decided to bowl first?”
“Yeah, there looks like a little bit in the wicket and we want to give our bowlers first opportunity and hopefully we can make use of the ‘conditions’ and get into their middle order.”
*Problem is that the ‘conditions’ are a batting paradise!! With only a promise of runs, runs and runs…
Nassar Husein will never forget his fatal mistake… Sending the Aussies in the Aussies finished the 1st day with 2-300 odd…. Not only was the match gone, but the series as well… From there they were never in the contest.
England lost the match by roughly 300 runs…
South African captain Graeme Smith made the same mistake and the Aussie laughed all the way to a 350 run win.
So when Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bowl, alarm bells were ringing. It wasn’t an attacking move, because they didn’t have Malinga. All they did was prevent Murali from bowling on the 5th day… hmm an interesting tactic.
Now as I type we stand at 4-551(dec) with Matt Hayden’s 40 odd a ‘failure’ in comparison to the rest of the line-up…
They were warned… We tried to warn them, but they wouldn’t listen.
Now a new look Aussie team is established, there is no pressure on them. Johnson and MacGill have a massive total to bowl to. They can set attacking fields all day because they have been allowed first use of a belter of a wicket.
The Sri Lankan batting will have to lift, without their best bat Sangakara (Hamstring), it will be a tough task. They have been in the field for the best part of 2 days and will have to turn around and face the music. Granted McGrath and Warne are missing, but if you are chasing 550 it doesn’t matter.
There is surely a better way to spend time in an Australia Summer than chasing leather….
Hats of to the Aussies though… Jaques, Clarke, Hussey have ensured that the Sri Lankan pants have well and truly been pulled past their ankles. Brilliant dedicated batting has ensured the smooth transition of Australian cricket…
World Cricket must be ruing what could have been… Imagine if they had bitten the bullet - batted 1st and scored 450 and then made the new look batting line up chase, knowing they would face the hand grenades of Murali on a 5th day wicket? The pressure would have been well and truly on…
Now, Johnson and MacGill have enjoyed two days drinking tequila’s and sunbaking whilst the Aussies pile on the runs… There is no pressure on them…
Apart from the potential sunburn… There is nothing to worry about….
Set sail…. Set sail…
The Aussies are on their way…
But why oh why were they allowed to be in this position??
Damn them!! I’l have to wait till India for the Aussie’s to be truly pushed…

Sri Lanka, just like all of the others have spurned an opportunity to get after Australia and not allow Johnson to settle.
But, and I do mean but, there have been a couple of things Australia could have done better which is ominous for Sri Lanka. Both openers were out to very ordinary shots, especially Jaques. At 100 he should have taken a moment and settled to gather his thoughts and start again. Just like Michael Clarke and Mike Hussey did. Matthew Hayden played an arrogant shot to an honest toiler and threw his wicket.
Ricky Ponting was the only one who got out to a decent delivery. Murali threw one up (literally) and beat Ponting in flight.
As for the bowling, Mitchell Johnson....if you get the new pill MAKE THE BATSMAN PLAY!!!!! His bowling was let go far too often by Sri Lanka, even at 2/10. It may seem hyper-critical but the Aussies can do better than what they have showed in the first two days.
