Monkey Business - Racism shows its ugly head
October 19th 2007 02:55
The heightened animosity in the Australia vs India series and the racial taunting of Andrew Symonds has exposed the seedy underbelly of racism and has once again brought the ugly issue to light. How in this day and age people are so ignorant and for lack of a better word dumb, defies belief.
Australia is not squeaky clean itself, the Cronulla riots exposed the anti-them sentiment that had permeated our youth culture.
As an evolved society, one which claims to be long past the slave days, and the ridiculous anti-black culture, in essence, how much has really changed? The answer, not much, not much at all!
The governments, both home and abroad have been pushing the fear factor – September 11 being the catalyst for this new movement. The anti-terrorism movement. Which lead to attacks on Iraq and the hunt for Wally… I mean Osama and Hussein. Racism is still an ugly issue, a dominant issue, we just conveniently choose to ignore it.
Until an incident that involves one of our own, brings the issue raging back. How can this happen this day and age? How could anyone acuse US of racism.. If you can't tell I am being sarcastic
Of course I’m talking about Andrew Symonds and the way in which he has been disgracefully treated in India. Every time he gets near the ball the crowd goes wild, echoes of ape and monkey sounds engulf the ground. The fans then themselves become monkeys and imitate our closest primate. Put simply, it’s distasteful, shameful, ignorant and wrong!
The Indian cricket board at first tried to sweep it under the rug, but then bowed to political pressure.
No one should be subjected to this sort of treatment. No body should be vilified and persecuted for being themselves. But this is racism, make no mistake, this is ignorance and mob mixed together to create ugly scenes.
It sets the scene for a fiery return leg when India travels to these shores for a test-match series. Officials have already begun pleading our fans not to return the favour. The last thing they want is ugly confrontations in Australia. After-all we are an accepting culture, a peaceful culture…
Racism will always be around, it lays dormant, but it will always be apart of our society. It is human nature to fear the unknown and this is where it all stems from.
I hope it hasn’t effected Andrew Symonds too much, he is a great player, an exciting player and I’d love nothing more that to see him cement his position in the greatest test team on the planet. He is a pretty laid back character, but everyone has their breaking point. I just hope it rolls right off his back and that he can use it as motivation to go on to bigger and better things.

Symonds has come out and said that it has hurt him, can't blame him. The same problem is in soccer and has never really left the game.
When will everybody wake up?

Hair is a topic to himself, and I think that would be a heated debate....
Perhaps for a later date...
