AFL Power Rankings Finals Week 1
September 11th 2006 00:32
1. Sydney
2. West Coast
3. Adelaide
4. Fremantle
5. Melbourne
6. Western Bulldogs
I was so off with my tips this week, only picking a measley 1 from 4! Without a shadow of a doubt Sydney and West Coast are the two best teams in the competition and if they don't meet in the Grand Final I will be devastated (not only as an Eagle fan but as a football fan). Sydney were good enough to get over the line the other night and will cherish the week off considering they have a few niggling injuries to their key forwards, and they thrived with the poor defensive structure that Worsfold employed. Any team who gets a 'W' at the house of pain deserves to be on top, and they have to be considered the best chance of the comp.
Adelaide only came out on top in the final term. A slow start against a seemingly lacklustre Dockers outfit meant they had to claw it out against the boys from Fremantle. They eventually kicked through, and will be scouting West Coast in a big way over the next two weeks. I have doubts whether or not they can beat West Coast as the Eagles have proven to be their bogey side, and even though there is the possibility of regaining Ricciuto and Burton for the clash, for me it's a Eagles-Swans grand final with Adelaide coming in a close third. West Coast will have Kerr and Embley back in the lineup this week and should dominate the Bulldogs, who were good enough to sink the pies.
Freo were unimpressive and their momentum seems to have hit a bit of a hurdle with the trip to AAMI Stadium. They should have the ability to outclass Melbourne, but only if their defensive line fires. Melbourne has potentially the best forward line in the AFL and if the Demons' midfield manages to deliver the ball, Fremantle are going to find it very difficult to stop the Dees. The Dockers need to use the size of Subiaco to outrun Melbourne but could struggle against the Swans the week after.
