A place to debate all things sport

Sports Bar - June 2008

Tyson Gay has just recorded the fastest 100m of all time... Pity it won't count

The clock stopped at 9.68sec for the 25 year-old from Arkansas but even as the 20,000 crowd inside the Hayward Field Stadium began to gasp, the digital trackside wind reading showed a following breeze of 4.1 metres per second, more than twice the limit allowed for record purposes.

Tyson Gay - 9.68

No World Record - but this run will go down in history.

I don't care how big a tail wind he had, that is QUICK! gee that is QUICK!!

The showpiece event of the Olympics is shaping up as an absolute classic. Usain Bolt has one of the best names ever seen for a sprinter and is the current World Record holder with a 9.72, but there are men running sub 9.9's this year... Has there ever been a faster Olympic field?

See you in Beijing boys!

The Centenary of Rugby League website has just put out some awesome videos detailing every club, their greatest moments and how they have gotten to where they are today. These videos are really well put together and have great footage of legends past and present. For me, the footage of Cliff Lyons and Bob Fulton carving through defenses was well worth the watch.

But there is something for every fan and yes - even Hunter Mariners and Western Reds fans will have something to look at. How good is that?

There are also club Bios and videos of the 100 Greatest players, if you have time, they are a must watch!

For Club bios, including teams like the Steelers, Mariners and Jets, click here

You have to love this time of year. For a sports fan, it doesn’t get much better.

Federer chasing history

The most prestigious tennis tournament has started, with Wimbledon serving up the intriguing battle between history chasing Federer, the bicep bulging Spaniard Nadal and the young gun aiming to take the tennis world by storm in Novak Djokovic. It is about time the men’s draw opened up, and now Federer will have to work the hardest he ever has to gain the crown… That can only be a good thing for the game. Every champion needs a rival, it is what establishes them as a great. Sampras, Agassi, Becker, Connors, Mcenroe, Borg – all were elevated because of the battles against each other. The next few years could establish Fed ex has one of the greats if he can lift his game – when traditionally, at his age, the major triumphs slow considerably. It is a race against the clock and great to watch.

Origin 3 – the decider rolls around with Mitchell Pearch – son of Blues legend Wayne arriving for the biggest game of his career – it is poetic and what a stage it will be come next Wednesday. Can Anasta and Pearce perform in League's showpiece event? It is going to be an absolute blockbuster with an expected crowd of near 80,000

We also have the Tour de France about to start, with Aussie Cadel Evans a real chance to take it out if he manages to avoid the hussle, bussle and pile-ups of the opening week on the flat stages…

It is also the time in the footy season that fans can smell the finals – we watch as the logjammed Telstra Premiership contenders jostle for position on their way to glory…

The AFL is also heating up, with teams chasing the ‘Holy Grail’

And we also have Wallabies starting to build for Bledisloe and Tri Nations Glory, and the Socceroos about to embark on the next phase of World Cup qualification…

I think I am forgetting something….

AND a little matter of the Olympics just around the corner as well!

Oh it is a great time of the year to be a sports fan!

The Player of the Year award goes under wraps after this round, so it is a good chance to look at the main contenders…

This is their ranking and points after round 15, where voting will go secret until the winner is announced at the Daly M Awards - and what a prestigious and historic award - the first player to win the award... it would be a huge honor!

June 17th 2008 05:40
The Cowboys have had some heartbreaking defeats this season, but finally have reason to celebrate after defeating the Knights in Townsville on Monday night. The Cowboys have been unlucky this year - they have had two losses under 2 points and two draws, but will be happy after registering their first win of the season.

WWE Superstars Batista and MVP were today given a Rugby League lesson by the Wests Tigers. They got a quick rundown on everything from passing, tackling and kicking - and then turned the tables inside the ring.

This is where these guys make a crust, and they took the Tigers through numerous grappling and wrestling techniques. .. Note, no chairs were used in these training drills

I must have watched the Rocky movies a million times over, but trust me, you don’t want to box the way he does! I had my first experience inside the squared circle and I have to say it is one of the toughest things you can do. I was put through my paces for oven an hour, going through various drills, both offensive and defensive and it has given me a whole new appreciation for the sport.

The Sonny Bill Williams circus keeps rolling on, it is a shame, because Sonny is a good kid, but seems to be getting influenced by the wrong crowd. So we will continue to read about SBW’s much publicized contract – we are told approx worth $400,000 a season… It is clear SBW is unhappy, but he is a shadow of his former self at the moment. On the field he is destructive as ever, but something has changed in him and he just appears to be lost and confused at the moment.
