Beckham Moves to LA

January 12th 2007 08:27
David Beckham
On 11th January, it was announced that David Beckham had signed a $USD50-million contract with the MLS club Los Angeles Galaxy. When combined with endorsements and a profit-sharing agreement with the club, could be one of the most lucrative contracts in sports history.

Over the five years became will at the Galaxy, Beckham stands to make over $275-millon.[The break down of this is as follows:

Annual $10-million salary.
$25-millon from existing sponsorship deals with Motorola, Pepsi, Gillette and Volkswagen.
$10-millon from shirt sales.
$10-millon return from stakes in the club.
This means that Beckham will receive around $55-million a year, equating to $275-million over the five years of the deal. This figure could increase if Beckham receives a pay rise from any of the parties involved.

What effect the move will have on American soccer remains to be seen, but many US clubs reported an increase of season ticket sales after Beckham's signing was announced. For example, in the hours following Beckham's signing, the Galaxy enjoyed a surge of over 1,000 season tickets being sold for 2007, despite the fact he likely would not be playing for the club until August.

Many of the English tabloids criticised Beckham for purely signing for the money, with both The Mirror and The Sun running headlines of "Posh and Bucks", although Beckham denies he is moving for the money.

Will the move raise the status of the game in the US?

Should There be a Twenty20 World Cup?

January 11th 2007 06:59
The Age reports that even though the crowd loved this week's Twenty20 match at the SCG, and the TV ratings were through the roof, Adam Gilchrist remains unconvinced the cricket world needs the Twenty20 World Cup that will take place in September in South Africa.

Gilchrist said yesterday:
Adam Gilchrist
"I personally don't think we need too much more Twenty20 cricket at international level." "That's why - I'm sure I'll get in strife for this - but I do have question marks over a Twenty20 World Cup. But that said, it's on the schedule, and I for one would definitely love to go and play and be a part of it. But it's a delicate balance."

"It's a great vehicle for domestic cricket and developing nations' cricket. But I wouldn't like to see it flooded into the market and taking away from all the great products that cricket has to offer."

"I must admit I was sceptical of Twenty20. Last night was the first time I've been bitten by it," he said. "But I'm still not 100 per cent sure on the World Cup status. We've got to protect the jewels in the crown that are 50-over World Cups and Test cricket."

Do you agree with Gilly's assessment?

Brett Lee's Big Hit of the Summer

January 9th 2007 10:09
The Age reports that Brett Lee has reached No. 4 on India's music charts.
Lee wrote the song "You're The One For Me" in just half an hour during a break in the Champions Trophy last year. He recorded the song as a duet with Bollywood icon Asha Bhosle. The drawing power of Lee and Bhosle saw the single jump into the top 5 in its first week. It looks like Lee will now record a full studio album to release in India.

Lee sings in English and Hindi during the song and you can watch the video clip below. He now also has about a dozen offers to shoot Bollywood movies.
