AFL: Wish me luck as you wave me goodbye!

September 27th 2006 00:00
For the first time in history I am heading down to the city of trams, coffee and AFL. I have never been there before and I am chomping at the bit to get down there.

After the bitter disappointment of last year, falling just 4 points short of glory and being the only West Coast supporter amongst the ranting and raving of Sydney supporters in a northern Sydney pub, I have decided that it is time to head to see it for myself. I have spent a very dear $1250 on flights, game day tickets and accommodation to spend a very short 28 hours in Mexico.

I have been one of the most passionate West Coast supporters for a long time and realise that if I don't do this now, there will be very few opportunities like it to pop up again in my lifetime. Managing to get my first Saturday night off wok in about 2 months, I'll be back in Sydney at 13:00 Sunday to get back into normal life (however I plan on being very tired and hungover).

Next week I will give you a rundown of the game in the perspective of a supporter at the ground, and plan to take MANY, MANY photos. So wish me luck as I head on down to often bleak and stormy Melbourne, I'll bloody well need it with the swans in the form they are! Alas, I bloody love the Eagles and have the utmost confidence they can break the 12 year drought!

GO WEST COAST!!!!!

AFL: Goodes can win 3 Brownlows

September 26th 2006 05:42

Goodes: A triple Brownlow Medallist?
Sydney coach PAUL ROOS says ADAM GOODES has his best football ahead of him and is more than capable of winning the AFL's Brownlow Medal a third time.

Last night Swans star GOODES became the 12th multiple winner in the Brownlow's history and the first indigenous player to have claimed the award twice.

Only four players, HAYDN BUNTON (Fitzroy 1931-32-35), DICK REYNOLDS (Essendon 1934-37-38), BOB SKILTON (South Melbourne 1959-63-68) and IAN STEWART (St Kilda 1965-66 and Richmond 1971), have won the medal three times.

ROOS says GOODES is only 26 and has been a midfielder for just two years and is still learning how to play the position.

The premiership coach says GOODES played better football this year than in his first Brownlow triumph of 2003.

GOODES says it was great to share the joy of his win with his team-mates but he is now eagerly awaiting another possible match-up with West Coast's 2004 Brownlow Medallist CHRIS JUDD in Saturday's grand final at the MCG.

NRL Trophy Missing

NRL Trophy Grand Final
Missing in action...
A search is underway to find the NRL Premiership trophy after it went missing this morning while in transit to Melbourne for a photo shoot.

Just five days out from Sunday's Grand Final at Telstra Stadium, the NRL trophy is believed to be headed to Perth after a mix up in baggage handling with Qantas.

Chief operating office GRAHAM ANNESLEY says the NRL is unaware of the exact location of the trophy but he has assured the public that the trophy will be on hand at Sunday's Grand Final.

Peter Brock RIP

September 8th 2006 11:04
Peter Brock, motor racing legend
Peter Brock decked out in his beloved Holden race gear

Peter Brock was a dead set legend. Now I am no expert on motor racing, nor could I list you Brock’s pages and pages of achievements or emphasise exactly what he did for motor racing in Australia. However, knowing a very small amount about Brock, I know that he won the prestige event of the industry 6 out of 7 years and won the race by 6 laps which is unprecedented in the modern era. I know that when I would watch the Bathurst 1000 every year as a kid, I would barrack for Brock as he was the only name in the race that I knew. I know that he had a true passion for what he did and he was the only true household name in the sport. I know that he will be more sorely missed by the sporting fraternity than many other sporting personalities because he was the epitome of what we like to call a ‘decent bloke

Aboriginal kids in action

Some of the most talented sportsmen in Australia will never be discovered. They will train everyday of their lives and probably be much better than a lot of their competitors at a much higher level than them because they are Aboriginal. A young boy growing up in outback Northern Territory playing footy in bare feet on rock hard ground will never have the support of someone who has grown up in a privileged family who can afford the state of the art Adidas boots or the latest puma cricket bat. And it's not going to change.

Why I love September...

September 5th 2006 00:33
There's something about September that gets my heart racing. After the bleak of the Winter, we finally see the some come out, bring out the singlets and boardshorts again and head down to the beach. You can wake up earlier in the morning (though I never do) and actually enjoy it. But most of all, it's the most exciting month of the year to be a football fan.

Anything can happen in September, teams who scrape into the finals can end up with the premiership, the minor premiers can be knocked out in the second week if they don't hit their straps, players raise their intensity because they know an entire year's work is on the line every time they lace up their boots. There is nothing better than being an Australian in the first month of Spring
