AFL: Serious concerns for Ricciuto

August 29th 2006 06:16

AFL club Adelaide says its captain MARK RICCIUTO could have Ross River Fever or one of a multitude of other illnesses.

The club says it simply doesn't know what's wrong with RICCIUTO, amid rumours the Brownlow medallist has contracted the debilitating Ross River Fever.

A Crows spokesman says results from further blood tests on RICCIUTO are expected to be known tomorrow.

Ross River Fever is a rare mosquito-carried virus which has previously struck down Australian golfer PETER LONARD, who didn't play for about 18 months after contracting the illness in the 1990s.

The courage of footballers...

August 29th 2006 00:55
Tom Lonergan after being collected. Source: Daily Telegraph
I have the utmost respect for anyone who follows the flight of the ball in an attempt to take a mark. I mean think about it, you’re on a field with 35 other potential hazards with eyes only for the ball completely disregarding any thoughts for your own safety for the benefit of the team. Geelong’s Tom Lonergan paid a heavy price for such an act on the weekend, losing a kidney taking a bump from a player he couldn’t see. Leo Barry likewise last season ruptured his spleen in a very similar incident, you just cannot question the guts these guys have.

I hate to bring it up, but Josh Hunt’s pathetic attempt at a mark against St Kilda completely undermines the credibility of the sport and of the guys who week in and week out put their bodies on the line. Hunt eventually ended up apologising to his fellow Cats after the amount of scrutiny the incident received in the media. People always like to say to me when I criticise professional sportsman that ‘I wouldn’t have done any better’, but to me that argument is weak. These guys are being paid very well to do this kind of stuff, I get paid for a completely different profession and as a knowledgeable sporting fan reserve the right to criticise players’ actions.

Each year the mark of the year is awarded by Jezalenko (YOU BEAUTY!) and every year it goes to the bloke who gets the highest in the air. He justifies it by explaining ‘it’s what the kids aspire to, climbing on guys’ shoulders’, but while the old fashioned speccies are traditionally the ones to make the highlight reels (Kappa, Ablett, etc. etc.), it is the guys like Lonergan and Barry in my estimation that are the real highlights. It doesn’t take balls to jump on an opponent’s shoulders, but it sure as hell does running back with the flight of the ball. Humans usually carry 5 litres of blood in their bodies and Lonergan had lost 3, he was in serious trouble.

AFL: Crows Injury Update

August 29th 2006 00:55
Adelaide's faltering AFL premiership campaign has been dealt severe blows with stars ANDREW MCLEOD and BEN HART unlikely to play again this season.
And Crows captain MARK RICCIUTO won't play again until the finals, while forward TRENT HENTSCHEL will miss at least 12 months with a serious knee injury.
The damage to the key Adelaide quartet was confirmed by Crows football operations manager JOHN REID today.
REID said MCLEOD will have surgery later today on an infected left foot and will miss up to four weeks, while HART'S achilles tendon strain will sideline him for at least a month.
RICCIUTO, who missed yesterday's loss to Port Adelaide, will have further tests this week to ascertain the exact nature of his virus.

NRL: Tahu set for return

August 29th 2006 00:55
Tahu crosses for the Blues.
Parramatta has good news on the injury front with Test star TIMANA TAHU possibly back for the second week of the NRL finals.
TAHU injured his knee in the State of Origin decider on July 5 and thought he'd miss the rest of the year.
In further good news, frontrower MICHAEL VELLA is rated a good chance of returning for Friday's match against North Queensland while winger ERIC GROTHE'S overcome a neck strain and will
definitely play.

Liesel Jones SMASHES World Record.

August 27th 2006 10:42
Breaststroke diva Leisel Jones has continued her demolition of the swimming record books by obliterating the 100m world mark at the Australian short course championships in Hobart.
The Queenslander stormed home in her semi-final to stop the clock at 1minute 4.12seconds to slash 0.67s off the old mark set by American Tara Kirk in Texas in 2004.
Jones now holds the long and short course 100 and 200m breaststroke world records.

This one's for the cabbie...

I asked a cabbie last night if he’d like me to write on any particular sports topic. After some hesitation he asked me to address whether or not match fixing occurs in Australian sport. So this one’s for the cabbie who took me from Station Bar in North Sydney over the bridge to Wake Up

Pakistan within their rights.

Questions have to be asked. Now I am a little shady on the specifics of the ball dimensions and how these differed from the ball that was inspected by Billy Doctrove and Darrell Hair, but something drastic must have happened to it. The laws of cricket dictate that the umpire gets hold of the ball at the natural breaks in the game such as tea, lunch, etc. as well as during the drinks breaks. It couldn't have been more than half an hour since the umpires last inspected the ball. So what happened

With a litter of injuries early in the game, it was always going to be tough for the Bulldogs. Pull your head in

August 18th 2006 10:44
Warnie
It's been a question that has separated sporting fraternities in the past and one which everyone seems to have a strong opinion on. It seems to be a question that is asked again and again after professional sports people hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons. And there is controversy after controversy regarding the off - and on in the case of Joey Johns - field behaviour of our sporting stars. This week alone there were 3 incidents which made front and back page news in the NRL and the residue of the Chris Tarrant/Ben Johnson case is finally coming to a close with threats of legal action after a Melbourne newspaper accused Tarrant of leading a "rock 'n roll lifestyle". But as if you wouldn't....

The reason these guys get up to so much mischief off the field is because they can. They are treated like royalty when they hit the town and literally have women, drugs and alcohol at their disposal. No one can honestly say they wouldn't love this lifestyle. If you were to earn such a massive disposable income, have so much spare time on your hands and hold celebrity status everyone would behave like our stars and who blames them? What they do off the field is their business, not the public's. Why wouldn't you go out and sleep with beautiful women and consume all the unlimited alcohol that's available to you? The problem is that the minority are just plain stupid
